What is the size and age of my system?
The model number generally will depict the size of the unit. Every 12,000 BTUs represent 1 ton. A model number that has a 24 in it indicates a 2-ton unit, 30=2.5-ton, 36=3-ton, etc. Here is a list of several manufactures and their date codes.
Amana: The first two numbers are the year, and the second two numbers are the week.
Carrier, Bryant and Payne: Recently (within the last 20 years), the four numbers in the serial number represent the week and year. Previously, it was a complex series of letters and single digits. Call 905-672-0860 if you get stuck.
Coleman: Serial numbers prior to April 1992: the first two numbers are the month, then year and then series. After April 1992: the first two numbers are the year, then month and then series.
Comfortmaker (International Comfort): The first letter indicates the month (letters A-M, skipping the letter “I”), and the first two digits are the year.
Goodman: First two digits of the serial number are the year. Second two are the month. Compressor is the same. For example, Serial # 9709088872 indicates that the year is 1997 and the month is September.
Lennox: The first two or second two digits are the year. It varies by era, but most of them actually have a separate sticker somewhere that has the year printed on it. Newer models use the first two digits to indicate the manufacturing plant number. The next two digits indicate the year, and the fifth letter is the month. A=January, B=February, C=March, D=April, E=May, F=June, G=July, H=August, J=September, K=October, L=November, and M=December
Nordyne, Gibson, Tappan, Frigidaire and Maytag: The first two digits of the serial numbers are the year. The next two digits are the month.
Rheem, Ruud, and WeatherKing: In the middle of the serial number will be a letter F. The following four numbers are the week and year.
Trane/American Standard: Trane uses alpha codes in their serial numbers to determine the year of manufacture. They started this in 1987 with the letter B and skipped a few letters during the years. The first letter gives the year of manufacture as follows:
B=87, C=88, D=89, E=90, F=91, G=92, H=93, J=94, K=95, L=96, M=97, N=98, P=99, R=00, and Z=01.
In 2002, they started their serial numbers with the year it was built. For the year 2002, the first character of the serial number is 2; in 2003 it is 3, and so on.
How can I make my system more efficient?
  • Raise the thermostat setting as much as you can without sacrificing comfort. For every degree you raise the setting, you can expect to cut your cooling bills by 3% or more. Programmable thermostats will help, too.
  • Use shades, vented awnings, blinds or curtains to keep sunlight out, especially in the afternoon in rooms facing the west.
  • Reduce heat loss from ducts by sealing leaks and insulating ducts.
  • Clean or replace your air filter monthly.
  • Perform biannual maintenance.
  • Don’t block vents or ducts inside your house.
  • Cut back grass and foliage for easy airflow around your unit.
How do I know which unit to purchase?
  • Brand plays some role in the selection. However, improper installation can make even the best system run poorly, leading to more frequent repairs.
  • Select a trained, qualified air conditioning contractor.
  • Make sure the company is licensed, bonded and insured and has the ability to install the system correctly with a high-quality work ethic.
  • Ask friends, coworkers and local utility companies for recommendations.
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau before you make a choice.
